How to Reorder PDF Pages Into Any Custom Order

PDF page order problems happen more than you'd expect. A merge operation placed documents in the wrong sequence. A scanner reversed the pages. A presentation was assembled with sections in the wrong order. Or you simply need to move the conclusion to the front and the executive summary to page 2. Whatever the reason, reordering PDF pages is a powerful but often underused capability. Here's how to do it effectively.

When You Need to Reorder PDF Pages

• Correcting a merge gone wrong — You merged several PDFs but the files weren't in the right order. Now chapter 3 comes before chapter 1.
• Fixing scanner output — Automatic document feeders sometimes scan pages out of order, especially with multi-page documents fed face-down.
• Restructuring a report or proposal — Moving sections around to improve logical flow after initial assembly.
• Creating a presentation variant — Taking an existing deck and reordering slides for a different audience or context.
• Moving a cover or back page — A generated PDF placed the cover page last, or the table of contents needs to move after the title page.
• Eliminating and reordering simultaneously — You can reorder while also excluding pages you don't want in the output. If your PDF has 10 pages and you specify "3,1,2,5,7", only those 5 pages appear in the new PDF in that order.

Two Ways to Build Your Page Order

1. Click Thumbnails to Build Order Visually

After uploading your PDF, the tool generates thumbnail previews of every page. You can then click thumbnails in the order you want them to appear. Click page 3 first, then page 1, then page 2 — and the order field fills in automatically as "3, 1, 2". This visual method is ideal when you don't know the page numbers but can recognize the pages by their appearance.

This is particularly useful for reordering presentation slides, photo books, or any document where the visual content helps you identify which page is which more easily than a number would.

2. Type the Order Directly

If you know exactly which page numbers you want and in what order, typing "3, 1, 2, 4-8, 10" in the order field is faster than clicking thumbnails one by one. The format supports both individual page numbers (separated by commas) and ranges (using a hyphen). For example, "2, 4, 1, 3, 5-10" means: first show page 2, then page 4, then page 1, then page 3, then pages 5 through 10 in sequence.

Using Reorder to Delete Pages

Here's a powerful use of the reorder tool that many users don't realize: you can use it to delete pages from a PDF by simply not including them in your specified order. If you have a 10-page PDF and type "1-4, 7-10", pages 5 and 6 will be excluded from the output entirely. This makes the Reorder tool function as both a page organizer and a page deletion tool simultaneously.

Reorder + Other Tools: Powerful Combinations

• Reorder then Merge — Get each PDF into the right internal order, then merge them all into a final document
• Reorder then Add Page Numbers — After pages are in the final order, add page numbers so they're sequential
• Reorder then Compress — Rearranged documents may be slightly larger; compress them down to size
• Reorder then Rotate — If reordering reveals pages in wrong orientations, use Rotate PDF to fix them

Thumbnail Quality and Large PDFs

Thumbnails are generated at 35% scale by default, which is small but sufficient to recognize page content visually. For very complex PDFs with dense content, you may need to rely on the page numbers rather than the visual content to identify pages. For PDFs with more than 50 pages, thumbnail generation takes a bit longer as each page must be rendered individually. The tool supports any number of pages — there's no page limit — though very large PDFs (100+ pages) may take a minute or two to fully load their previews.

Pro Tip: The "All" Button

The Reorder tool has a handy "All" button that automatically populates the order field with all pages in original order (1, 2, 3, ... N). This is useful as a starting point: click "All" to get all pages listed, then manually edit the numbers to rearrange or remove specific pages. Much faster than typing all page numbers from scratch for a long document.
